Artificial Flower Arrangements

Published: July 25, 2006

Artificial flower arranging is similar to fresh or silk flower arranging, just with a different medium. Artificial flowers are made out of synthetic materials, such as plastic. Some people feel artificial flower arranging is a tacky art, while others feel that, if arranged properly, these arrangements can add elegance to a room.

The biggest reason many choose artificial flower arranging over fresh flower arranging is the cost. Decorating with artificial flowers is significantly less expensive than with fresh or even silk flowers and, if dusted regularly, they can last a lifetime.

To make an elegant arrangement, choose flowers fitting to your taste. Keep in mind, more realistic-looking flowers are best. Choose colors complimenting each other as well as your décor. You can find materials for articifial flower arranging at any craft store.

Learning artificial flower arranging takes time and practice, but knowing the ten basic arrangement forms is helpful.

Basic Arrangement Forms

For each form, one must incorporate focal flowers, line flowers, which are used to determine the shape, and filler flowers. The difference between each of these basic forms is the shape.

1. Pyramid: Though rarely done, this method for artificial flower arranging has a triangular base and is very tall. These can be done as centerpieces.

2. Dome: This is an all-round arrangement with an even distribution of flowers. The container is best at medium-height.

3. Crescent: This can be difficult because it is asymmetrical. The proportion and weight must be balanced so the arrangement is stable and attractive.

4. Horizontal: This arrangement is low, with the length usually twice the height.
5. Inverted T: Like the name suggests, this looks like an upside-down T. It differs slightly from the triangle form.

6. L Shape: This is not a symmetrical arrangement, because, like the name suggests, it looks like an L. Make sure this arrangement still looks well-balanced.

7. Fan: Use long, strong-stemmed flowers such as Gladiolus or Ester for this arrangement. For articifial arrangements in this form, choose those with long stems as well.

8. Triangular: Position the line flowers to form a triangle. The height should be greater than the width.

9. Oval: This type is usually done at funerals, but do not be afraid to try it elsewhere.

10. Vertical: This arrangement is tall with a short width.

After getting a grasp on the different types of flower arrangements, it will be easier to create your vision. There are only a few steps in artificial flower arranging, so put on your creative cap and get to work.

Artificial Flower Arranging

Start by cutting your floral foam to fit the container you wish to use. It is a good idea to buy several pieces of foam in case you make any mistakes along the way. Place a piece of duct tape at the bottom of the container and glue the foam to the duct tape, then when it is time to discard the arrangement, the foam can be pulled out and the container will not be damaged.

Cover the base of the arrangement with greenery. Use short pieces of greenery so there is plenty of room for the flowers.

Stick flowers into the foam, but have a shape in mind. Clip a picture from a magazine and try to recreate the arrangement. Just do not put the flowers in haphazardly; keep the arrangement smooth.

Fill in any gaps with baby's breath or another filler.

This whole process should take about 20 minutes.

Artificial flower arranging is a fun and relaxing hobby. Once you have perfected your artificial flower arranging skills, you can even try selling your creations at local craft shows or fairs.
