International Flowers & Florists: Fiji And Tropical Flowers
By:
Published: December 11, 2006
There are few destinations in the world more exotic than the Fiji Islands.
With 333 islands spread along the South Pacific, Fiji has an abundance of tropical sea and land creatures, tropical flowers and botanical gardens. Half of Fiji's landmass consists of forests and areas with hardwood trees.
Fiji is home to more than 2,000 plant species as well as one rare tropical flower—the Tagimaucia flower—which is found in the Northern Islands of Taveuni and Vanua Levu. Tagamaucia, which is Fijian for "crying tears of despair," is a red and white vining flower known to bloom between October and December. This rare tropical flower is protected by a difficult path leading to the Lake Tagimaucia.
It is not necessary to climb high mountains or traverse difficult paths to see Fiji's other tropical flowers. Just visit one of the many gardens which house other flowers, like tropical plumeria or white hibiscus. One such garden is the Garden of the Sleeping Giant. It is not a botanical garden, but a landscaped garden, located in the Nausori Highlands. This garden contains a variety of orchids, natural forest and a lily pond.
One of Fiji's official botanical gardens is the Thurston Gardens, formerly known as the Suva Botanical Gardens. This garden was founded by Sir John Thurston on the site of the original Fijian town of Suva in 1879. Today, this government-owned property lies directly next to the Fiji Museum.
Not everyone has the luxury of flying to Fiji to revel in the beauty of its exotic flowers. Thank goodness for Fiji florists who have online floral shops. Ordering flowers online makes it easy to partake of international flowers, such as the aforementioned tropical plumeria and white hibiscus. If plumeria and hibiscus are not to your liking, a Fiji florist can help you decide what other tropical flowers to consider.
White hibiscus is a hybrid of the flower; it is more often associated with bright, vibrant colors. The flower is marked by the same physical characteristics as other flowers: flat, trumpet-shaped flowers with five petals. Though they may be difficult to find and expensive to order, buying white hibiscus is a worthy endeavor to the admirers and aficionados.
The prices for delivering international flowers to Fiji vary on the type of floral arrangement and additional delivery charges. Shipping a bouquet consisting of orchids, Anthurium and Bird of Paradise generally costs between $54 and $79, with an additional delivery charge of $15. Teleflora.com offers a price guide, with offerings ranging between less than $40 and more than $150.
