Hawaiian Tropical Flowers: Dendrobium Orchids And Leis

Hawaii is home to hundreds of varieties of tropical flowers. Florists love Hawaiian flowers because many of them are long-lasting, while their vibrant colors and interesting shapes lend to creative arrangements. Others love Hawaiian flowers because of their beauty and exoticism.

One of the most common varieties of Hawaiian tropical flowers is the orchid. There are three varieties of orchids: the jewel orchid (anoectochilus), the twayblade (liparis) and the fringed orchid (platanthera). While these are common Hawaiian flowers, they are relatively unimpressive, especially when compared to the dendrobium orchid.

The dendrobium orchid flower is perhaps the most famous of all the Hawaiian flowers. There are more than 1,000 species of the dendrobium orchid and the beautiful flower grows in a myriad rainbow of colors.

Dendrobium orchids also are immensely popular because they are used to make Hawaiian leis. While Hawaiian leis can be made using any flower, the dendrobium is ideal because of its durability, range of colorful blooms and, most of all, because it is stunningly beautiful.

The Hawaiian lei often is given as a gift of love, celebration, greeting or honor. On television shows and in movies, visitors and newcomers to Hawaii receive a Hawaiian lei and a kiss on the cheek, complete with a ukulele and hula dancers. This is not far from real life; there are companies providing tourists with this special type of welcome.

Dendrobium orchids are not the only type of Hawaiian flower. The anthurium, for example, is not as common as the dendrobium orchid, but its beauty and assorted shapes have aided its growing popularity.

The hibiscus is another type of Hawaiian tropical flower. It comes in a range of colors, including white, yellow, pink and red. Yet another tropical flower is the protea flower—one of the more rare varieties.

While it would be nice to fly to Hawaii and pick an assortment of these or any other Hawaiian flowers to arrange for a wedding or as a gift, few people have either the time or the money. With help from the Internet and international delivery, however, these dreams may easily become a reality. There may even be a florist or two in some areas capable of importing some varieties of Hawaiian tropical flowers. There are many types of flowers available for delivery, some of which include; the Hawaiian lei, bouquets or arrangements.
